As buildings become increasingly complex and occupancy patterns continue to evolve, maintaining water quality within the “Last Mile” of a building’s plumbing system presents new challenges for designers and specifiers.

This CPD explores how water quality can be influenced by system design, temperature management, stagnation, and operational conditions within commercial buildings. Participants will gain practical insights into the factors affecting water movement and stability, the risks associated with poor water quality outcomes, and strategies to support long-term system performance and occupant wellbeing.

The session examines current best-practice approaches to water system design, specification, and lifecycle management, with a focus on achieving reliable water quality outcomes in real-world building environments.

By the end of this CPD session, participants will be able to:

• Analyse how water quality changes within the Last Mile, including the impact of stagnation and hybrid occupancy on system conditions.
• Evaluate the influence of temperature on water system behaviour, including conditions that contribute to biological risk such as Legionella.
• Identify how system design, layout, and coordination influence water movement, stability, and performance within buildings.
• Apply performance-led specification strategies to support consistent water quality outcomes over time, including alignment with verified standards.
• Assess how point-of-use systems and lifecycle management strategies contribute to maintaining system performance in real building conditions.
