When former news journalist Royce Tan from Billi Australia sat down with design visionary and Indulge Renovations’ Founder Alan Nasrallah, the conversation wasn’t just about aesthetics—it was about crafting a kitchen that invites joy.
Tasked with creating a dream entertainer’s space with a modern, bold black design brief, Alan detailed how every decision was a deliberate step toward blending luxury with practicality. In this exclusive interview, learn expert tips for designing a kitchen that doesn’t just impress guests but elevates your own lifestyle, proving that the heart of a home isn’t just in its style, but in its ability to spark connection.
The Port Melbourne Kitchen & Bold Black Palette
Billi Interviewer: This striking black kitchen was designed for a retired couple as a powerful statement. Was the bold palette at the client’s request, or did it evolve from the stonework?
Alan Nasrallah: The black cabinetry was actually driven by the stone selection. The clients wanted a sleek, modern aesthetic, but we leaned into the dramatic black to complement the Brazilian Avocado Quartzite. The contrast lets the stone’s natural veining take center stage—it’s a perfect example of how materiality can guide design.
The Conversation-Starting Details
Billi Interviewer: Beyond the stone, what unique touches did you incorporate to reflect the clients’ desire for a luxurious yet personal space?
Alan Nasrallah: Their brief was clear: this apartment needed to rival the warmth and grandeur of their previous home. The 4.5-metre Quartzite benchtop became the heart of the open-plan kitchen—its organic movement feels like a piece of art. We framed it with full-height black cabinetry to amplify its impact, then added metallic accents to the island for a touch of refinery.
But the real hero? It has to be custom timber floors. We sourced wide-plank boards from Germany, stained to a rich, mid-tone that grounds the space. It’s those layers—texture, tone, and craftsmanship—that make a design feel lived in, not just styled.
The Entertainer’s Water Filtration Checklist
Billi Interviewer: When specifying water systems for homes like this, what features do you prioritise?
Alan Nasrallah: Functionality meets flair. Most clients start by asking for Boiling and Chilled filtered water—essential for daily use. But I always encourage them to consider the Sparkling function. The upgrade cost is minimal, but the payoff is huge: imagine serving a crisp glass of sparkling water at a dinner party straight from the tap. It’s those effortless luxuries that leave guests impressed.
An under-sink system is ideal—it delivers all three functions without cluttering up the benchtop. For serious entertainers, it’s non-negotiable.
Kitchen Design Tips for Hosts & Home Cooks
Billi Interviewer: What advice would you give to homeowners renovating to entertain guests?
Alan Nasrallah:
Final Thought: “Great kitchens aren’t just beautiful—they’re tools for connection. Every detail, from the stone to the sparkling water tap, should make life (and hosting) more joyful.
