Microplastics In Water

Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic (ranging in size from 0.05mm–5mm in diameter) that can enter your body via your drinking water. The University of Newcastle recently released a report that suggests people across the globe are consuming 5 grams of microplastics each week and until more is known about the impact of microplastics the recommendation is that drinking filtered water can help to remove them. Below is info on the effects of ingesting microplastics in water and how you can remove microplastics in drinking water.

Billi has been at the forefront of the instant filtered boiling and chilled water systems industry for over 30 years. All our water filtration systems come with an assurance of quality, innovation & sustainability and are proudly Australian-designed & made to strict quality standards in our state-of-the-art facilities in Melbourne. Here is what you need to know about microplastics and why our water filtration systems can help combat microplastics in drinking water.

Are Microplastics In Water Harmful To Humans?

A lot of research still needs to be done to fully understand the implications of microplastics for humans, however having foreign matter in our bodies generally isn’t a good thing – especially when it comes to microplastics as plastic can take hundreds or thousands of years to decompose or break down. Scientists have also found that some microplastics can pass the gut barrier reaching the bloodstream which may also have serious implications. Many researchers hypothesise that microplastics could lead to oxidative stress, DNA damage and inflammation as well as other potential problems when it comes to our health.

Removing Microplastics In Drinking Water

One of the ways that microplastics can enter our bodies is through our drinking water. So, how can we reduce the potential risk and remove microplastics in drinking water?

Our water filtration systems use premium micron filters that utilise a unique Fibron X® technology. This technology has a graded density profile that provides superior drinking water quality. We have a range of filters with different filtration levels however if your goal is to remove microplastics in water, our 0.2 Micron filter provides the highest level of filtration filtering out particles that are even smaller than microplastics.

In addition to this, they also filter out other nasties from our drinking water including:

  • Chlorine
  • Odour
  • Parasitic cysts including cryptosporidium & giardia
  • Heavy metals and lead

To ensure ongoing trouble-free operation and optimal water filtration we recommend replacing your filters every 12 months (or earlier if you live in an area where water quality isn’t great or you have a high consumption). You can replace filters yourself (see our how-to videos for step-by-step instructions) or we can arrange for a technician to do it for you.
